Extremely hot East Asia and flooding western South Asia in the summer of 2022 tied to reversed flow over Tibetan Plateau

Abstract In the summer (July and August) of 2022, unprecedented heat wave occurred along Yangtze River Valley (YRV) over East Asia while flood western South (WSA), which are located on eastern sides Tibetan Plateau (TP). Here, by analyzing interannual variability based observational reanalysis data, we show evidences that anomalous zonal flow subtropical (TP) explains a major fraction extreme events in 2022. As isentropic surfaces incline eastward (westward) with altitude (western) side warm center TP summer, easterly (westerly) upper troposphere generates descent (ascent) ascent (descent) via gliding. The is extremely strong to reverse climatological westerly 1994, 2006, 2013 2022 strongest since 1979, it anomaly TP, leading YRV WSA anomalously dominated atmospheric internal related mid-latitude train, cold sea surface temperature tropical Indian Ocean increases probability reversed reducing meridional gradient tropospheric temperature.
